Family Photos by the Ocean: Finding Stillness on the North Coast

The beach was busy, full of Cool Cabanas, laughter and summer energy. But I’m always on a mission to search between the crowds and find little pockets of solitude for magic family moments that feel completely private.
The kids ran straight for the water, fearless and free. The waves were small and playful, the kind that make everyone laugh. There’s nothing quite like photographing families in motion, the joy, the chaos, the wet hair and sandy toes.
That’s the magic I love most about coastal sessions. They’re unpredictable, full of movement and light, and always end with smiles that can’t be posed.

Photographing another photographer feels different. There’s a shared understanding of how fleeting childhood feels, of the quiet satisfaction in freezing a moment that will never come again. Its also a huge honour, photographers know what the like and to be picked by someone else in the industry feels great.
We didn’t overthink the session, as usual I just let the day unfold — the kids splashing and laughing, everyone soaked and happy. The photos are exactly what I want my work to feel like: alive, warm, unfiltered.

Even on the most crowded beaches, there are moments of calm. A stretch of sand between waves, a pause before laughter, the hush that comes when the light starts to dip. That’s what I’m always looking for when I photograph families: the stillness within the chaos.
Because that’s what family life really is, wild and beautiful, but threaded through with tiny, perfect moments of connection.

This North Coast family photoshoot reminded me why I love what I do, documenting families not just as they look, but as they feel. Sun-warmed skin, salty air, the easy rhythm of a day spent together by the ocean.
If you’re dreaming of a session that feels like summer – honest, natural and full of heart, I’d love to create it with you. Head here to get in contact and make a booking.
