What to Expect from a Family Photo Shoot with Me

If you’ve never had a professional family photo shoot before, you might be wondering what actually happens. Will it feel awkward? What should you do with your hands? What if your kids run wild? (Spoiler: I love that part).

I want your session to feel relaxed, natural, and true to your family. That’s why I never rush, I don’t book back-to-back shoots, and my goal is always to capture the little moments that matter most. Here’s exactly what you can expect when you book with me.

Step 1: Booking Your Session

Once you get in touch, we’ll chat about the type of session you’d like — whether that’s an at-home morning, a golden-hour adventure in the Northern Rivers, or a little mix of both. To secure your date, I take a $100 deposit, with the balance due seven days before your session.

Step 2: Preparing for the Day

Don’t stress about outfits or Pinterest-perfect homes. I’ll guide you on what to wear (think comfort and timeless rather than matchy-matchy) and help you choose a location that fits your family. The aim is simple: to keep things easy and enjoyable.

Step 3: During the Shoot

This is where the magic happens — and where I want you to feel completely at ease.

When we meet, I’ll take a few minutes to chat and let everyone settle in before pulling out the camera. I never expect kids (or adults!) to switch instantly into “photo mode.” Instead, I ease into the session so it feels like a relaxed hangout rather than a performance.

You won’t need to “pose” in stiff ways — I’ll guide you gently with prompts if you want a bit of direction, but most of the time I encourage natural interaction. That might look like:

  • A game of chase with the kids across the sand.
  • A cuddle on the lounge with everyone piled in together.
  • Walking hand-in-hand through long grass while chatting.
  • Letting your kids lead the way — their curiosity and energy often create the most joyful images.

If your little ones are shy or need a break, we slow down. If they’re full of beans and racing around, I embrace that energy. There’s no right or wrong — I adapt to your family’s rhythms so your photos feel authentic, not forced.

Above all, my goal is to capture connection: the way your child’s hand curls around yours, the way you look at each other mid-laugh, the way your family feels together in this season of life. These are the moments that matter most.

Step 4: After Your Session

I carefully edit your images to bring out warmth, light, and the authentic mood of the day. Within three weeks, you’ll receive a private online gallery where you can download your images, choose favourites, and order prints if you’d like.

My Promise to You

I won’t make you feel stiff or forced. I won’t rush you. And I won’t expect your family to behave in a way that isn’t you. What I will do is create images that reflect your story in a way that feels honest, beautiful, and full of life.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for, I’d love to hear from you.
