Photographing Neurodiverse Kids in the Northern Rivers
Family photography isn’t just about pretty backdrops and coordinated outfits. It’s about connection — capturing the way your child scrunches their nose when they laugh, the way you look at them when they’re in their element, the small and ordinary moments that are actually everything.
I’m not only a family photographer I’m also a mum in a household with a whole heap of diverse needs! On top of that many of the families I work with include kids with neuro diversities – whether that’s autism, ADHD, sensory sensitivities or something else unique to them. Over the years, I’ve learned that photographing neurodiverse kids isn’t about trying to get them to behave a certain way. It’s about meeting them exactly where they are and creating an environment where they feel safe, comfortable, and free to be themselves.
For many neurodiverse kids, outdoor family photo sessions work amazingly well. Being outside allows them to roam, explore, and be wild. There’s no pressure to sit still or pose — I’ll follow their lead, whether that means climbing rocks, running through the grass, or splashing at the edge of the ocean.
There’s nothing I haven’t seen, and I welcome every bit of their energy. Some of the most beautiful, joy-filled images happen when kids feel free to move in their own way.
When parents ask me the best time of day for family photos in the Northern Rivers, I normally recommend early evening in the precious ‘golden hour’, but for neurodiverse kids, mornings can actually work best. The light is still soft and golden, the beaches and fields are quieter, and children often feel more grounded earlier in the day when their cup is still full.
All this being said – you are the expert for your kiddo so if mornings aren’t right for your family, let’s chat about when you think we’ll get your family in their best possible moment. Together, we’ll choose a time that suits your child’s energy and rhythms.
One small thing that can make a big difference is showing your child my website before the session. Seeing photos of me, my style, and the kinds of families I work with helps them feel more comfortable before we even meet. By the time I arrive, I won’t feel like a stranger.
I also encourage families to share anything with me ahead of time – sensory triggers to avoid, favourite activities, or routines that help your child feel settled. The more I know, the more I can shape the session to suit your family.
I want every child to feel celebrated for who they are. If your child wants to wear pants on their head, a tutu, or all black from head to toe – go for it. Need to bring along a comforter or wear some chewellery, we’ll work with it, and those quirks often become the photos you treasure most.
I’m not aiming for “perfect” posed pictures. I’m looking for real connection: the way your child’s eyes light up when they find something fascinating, the joy when you join in their play, or the tenderness of a cuddle when they need a moment of calm.
I never book back-to-back family photo sessions. My aim is to give every family the time and space they need to feel comfortable. If your child needs extra time to settle, to take breaks, or to simply be themselves without pressure — that’s exactly what we’ll do. A relaxed pace always leads to the most genuine photos.
Every family is unique, and every child’s needs are different. My role is to create a session that feels relaxed, unhurried, and supportive — whether that means pausing for breaks, moving locations, or simply letting your child set the pace.
Photographing neurodiverse kids in the Northern Rivers isn’t about changing who they are. It’s about honouring them exactly as they are, right now, and capturing the love that ties your family together.
Those are the memories you’ll want to hold onto — your child, full of life, freedom, and love.
If this sounds like the kind of photography experience your family would love, I’d be honoured to capture your story. I photograph families all across the Northern Rivers — from Byron Bay to Lennox Head and beyond. To chat about a session or to book your date drop me an email thesunshinebetween@gmail.com
